Girl Scout Camp Training

Over the weekend, I went to training for taking my Girl Scout troop camping. I learned several new outdoor cooking methods that would be good for a group of younger girls and can’t wait to try them out. Part of the training was learning to build a fire – we had to build one and keep it burning for 5 minutes. I was unsure as all previous attempts at fire building were unsuccessful. I built my “A” shape, filled it with tinder, chris-crossed some twigs and lit it with a match, hoping for the best. I was quite surprised and excited when it lit immediately and kept on burning as I fed it bigger sticks. I lost track of how long it burned, but I had to dump water all over it to put it out. Go me!

S’mores and a Fire

While Scott was on his bike camping trip to Pinchot, the girls and I opted to go visit my parents.  After a yummy dinner and the girls’ carrot eating challenge, we (meaning my mom and dad) built a fire in the chimnea.  Good thing, because it was chilly.  And there was a breeze.  And I wasn’t dressed nearly warmly enough.

While we waited for it to burn down enough to roast marshmallows on (you honestly thought we built the fire to get warm?) we sat and chatted a bit.  Megan told us one knock-knock joke after another.

And Molly threw in a few of her own, too.

Finally the blessed time had arrived, and we roasted our marshmallows.  Very very quickly. The chimnea gets really hot and the marshmallows cook on all sides at one time when you put them in there.  They were tasty and everyone went to bed on a happy, full, slightly sugared-up tummy.  They were super tired from the day outside, so after warm baths, they fell asleep very very quickly.

Flower Walk

It was so nice out the other day, that the girls and I took a long walk around the block.  Scott and I had done some tuning on my camera, so I decided to take it along and try it out on the spring flowers.

I think tulips are my favorite.

We do a lot of following the leader on these walks…guess who likes to be in the front?

Or maybe daffodils are my favorite?

The bush that these flowers are on is about a block from our house. It always has such pretty red flowers.  I wish I knew what kind of bush it was so I could get one for our yard.

My girls – they are always so happy when we are outside.

Some more tulips – I just thought they were pretty growing up alongside the house like that.  And I think I like tulips better.

And a photo of Scott watching the girls ride their bikes & scooters. After our walk, they wanted to go practice riding in the church parking lot.  Sorry,  no more kiddo pictures, only a Scott-o picture 🙂

P.S. I think my camera is working again.  I’m so happy.

Happy Easter

We had a great family day today.  Started off early when the girls woke me up asking to see if the Easter Bunny had brought them anything.  We tried not to over-do it this year, since they have so many toys already…so just a few things.  They both seemed happy with their baskets.

After lounging with some coffee and snacking on some chocolate, Scott and I got to work on lunch.  He made the Pioneer Woman’s Pot Roast with Carrots and Rosemary Rolls.  I made her Rosemary Potatoes along with deviled eggs. (I got her cookbook for Christmas and we just love it!)

After getting dinner started, the girls and I set to work making origami bunnies for place cards for dinner with my parents.  The girls had been watching out the window for their Nana and Grandpa not-so-patiently when they arrived – they were so happy to see them!

Before eating lunch, we had to take care of the important business of collecting Easter Eggs.  The girls wanted to wait for Nana and Grandpa, but were getting antsy by the time they arrived.  So, we got right to it…

Here’s the table before we ate…notice the paper bunnies.

After dinner, we had dessert of Rosemary Pear Tart my mom brought, with coffee and peanut butter eggs.  The we enjoyed the rest afternoon together, visiting and enjoying the perfect weather.

Grump

Usually Molly is such a happy girl, but she sure was a grump this evening. She’s still cute…
