I got a new toy!

So, my birthday is coming up in just a few days. Scott got me a new digital camera. It’s a Pentax K100D. It’s not something I necessarily needed, but it’s someting I’ve been wanting. And I am going to be 30, after all, so he wanted to do something special.

I had a film SLR, and loved it, but hated the expense and hassle (proof in the 20 rolls of exposed film sitting in my kitchen) of processing all that film. So, we went digital. I wanted to go the less expensive route, and get a point & shoot. I love the point & shoot for the convenience, but I missed playing with all the features of the SLR. So, when Pentax introduced it’s latest DSLR, it was conveniently right before my birthday which came shortly after our company’s bonuses were distributed.

Here are a few pictures I took immediately after getting my new toy. I love this one of Molly. She is getting so big – I can’t even believe how big she is. She’s jabbering all sorts of gibberish. And trying really hard to walk. She just started to stand on her own for long stretches. If I recall, Megan was walking within days of doing that, so watch out! Posted by Picasa

Megan the artist

So, I come out from putting Molly to bed and I see Megan sitting in the chair where I had been sitting to work on a scrapbook page in Molly’s baby album. She has a red marker in hand and is haunched over the page. My gut reaction was to say “Megan, stop!” She hopped out of the chair and ran into the living room, scared at having been caught.

Once I saw that she had drawn on the back of a page I had already completed, I was disappointed, and told her that she needed to draw on her own paper, not my scrapbook pages. And her reply was “But I wanted to draw a picture of Molly.” So we talked about asking first, and only drawing where she’s allowed to draw, etc. But then I let her finish her artwork.

She was so proud of her pictures of Molly. There are three drawings of her. One is just her face. One is her body, complete with hands (long fingers!) and the other is her crawling. I was so impressed with the detail that she put into her pictures.

The last time she really drew much, it was just circles and loops, and that wasn’t really very long ago. All of a sudden, she’s writing letters and drawing people. She is becoming quite the artist.

This one’s going into the scrapbook anyway, just for Molly to see how much her big sister loved her. And tomorrow we’re starting on Megan’s own scrapbook so she can draw without worries of ruining my work! Posted by Picasa

Day at the park

We had so much fun at the park this day, just Megan and I. She ran around from place to place, trying out all the equipment while I tried to take some pictures of her and played with the camera.

Of course, when she was on the swings, all she could say was “Mommy, put the camera down and push me. Higher, higher!” So, I did.

Megan loves the swings. I wonder what it is…maybe feeling like she’s flying through the air. Free like a bird. Strangely, she prefers the “baby” swings to the “big kid” swings. I think the harness makes her feel safe. Which is ok by me, because it doesn’t scare me nearly as much when she lets go of the chains for a minute that way!

Ah, well, I wish we lived closer to the park so that we could go more often. And I just wish we had more time altogether to spend time there. She loves it, and it makes me happy to see her so happy. Posted by Picasa

Things you don't think about till you're a parent

It never occurred to me that I should worry about whether the park has bathrooms or where they’re located. That is, not until I took my newly-potty trained daughter to play on the swings. When all of a sudden, she says urgently “Mommy, I need to use the potty” with her eyeballs looking like they’re ready to float away.

I look around and think, “Oh no, where are the bathrooms in this place?” They must be in the buildings by the baseball field, so we high-tail it over there, down the hill, pushing the stroller. Poking around each corner, we don’t see them, until finally, jackpot. And then my heart sinks – they are padlocked shut. No way to get in.

Meanwhile, Megan is looking at me like she’s not going to last much longer. So, I’m wracking my brain to figure out what we’re going to do, while I say “Let’s go back to the car – I’ll think of something.” I know she’s not going to make it back home without peeing in her carseat (ick.) And I don’t really want to try to have her squat and pee on the ground, likely getting it all over herself (double ick.)

Finally, I have an idea and ask “Megan, do you think you could pee in a cup?” She says she’ll try it. We get to the car, I dig an empty coffee cup out from my drive one day last week, and pull the lid off. We go around beside the car, and I shield her with the door and the stroller, so she has some privacy. I held out the cup and told her to squat. She did a great job and was so proud of herself. She just kept saying “I peed in a cup.” At least I know that urine samples will be a breeze if that is ever necessary.

Oh the things she says

We’ve had some funny conversations lately. Megan and I, that is.

While getting her dressed…

Megan: I want to wear this shirt.

Me: Megan, that shirt doesn’t match. It isn’t the right color to go with those pants.

Megan: Well, is it the left color?

Me (trying not to laugh): Yes, it’s the wrong color.
