Mother’s Day

I am so blessed – it has been a great day.  This morning, I slept in and when I wandered downstairs, I was greeted at the bottom of the stairs with lots of hugs and kisses and “Happy Mother’s Day”.  Scott made me a cup of coffee and there were fresh pastries from Panera waiting on the table.  Yum.  After we had a nice breakfast, the girls lined up with their handmade cards (two from each).  They were full of lots of sweet drawings and notes.  And love.

Mother's Day

Then Scott had the girls give me the “big gift”.  He’s been excited about it all week and I really didn’t have a clue what to expect, since I hadn’t asked for anything.  So along they came with this big, flat box.  I was so surprised when I found floor mats for my Miata inside.  The right color and size and everything.  And they even say Miata on them.  Scott says they were hard to track down.  I didn’t even realize I needed them, but they will help keep my “snazzy new sports car” cleaner (new being used loosely, since I’ve now had it for 6 months!)

We had a nice relaxing day, just kind of puttering around the house.  The girls picked me a bouquet of flowers from the spirea bush in our back yard. Did a little gardening while Scott vacuumed out my car and installed my floor mats.  I potted a few plants from my mom and then picked most of the lily of the valley that popped up in the ground cover around the edge of the yard, in order to rescue them from being trampled by the horses kiddos.  I have been enjoying little wafts of their scent all afternoon.

Our day was finished off by a fantastic dinner of roast beef, carrots mashed potatoes and rolls, then a bit later, a walk to the neighborhood Friendly’s restaurant for ice cream cones.  Followed it up with a chat on the phone with my mom.  It was a great day with the perfect combination of relaxation and family time.  I am so, so blessed to have a wonderful husband and two special girls who call me mom.

New ‘do

Before my haircutI got a haircut on Thursday after work.  My hair has been growing for a long, long time and was getting a bit out of control.  I was ready for a change…a big change.  I had more than enough to donate to Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program.  They make and give wigs to women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatments.  I will be mailing in my donation this week – I hope it is able to help make some woman a beautiful wig. After my haircut

I am still getting used to the new hair – it requires more styling than my long hair did.  That was very much a wash and go style (even though it took forever to dry.)  The new one…not so much.  I spent 15 minutes on Friday trying to figure out how to do it with just the hairdryer and round brush – it looked like a mushroom.  Saturday I tried the wash & go thing – simply applying mousse and scrunching it.  It looked like I had bed head…and not in a good way.  This morning, I worked on it with the hair dryer, round brush and my flat iron.  It’s much better, but will take some getting used to.

Scooter Girls

Megan got a scooter for Christmas a few years ago, and this spring she has really been riding it a lot.  Of course, that meant Molly wanted to get in on the action.  We decided to go ahead and get her one, too, and they’ve been riding them nearly every day they can play outside since then!

Molly started out a little rough, but within a few weeks she is sailing around the driveway like her sister.  Her balance has gotten really good and she has learned all sorts of good tricks, too.  Much to our relief, she also finally learned to use the brakes!

This is Molly in the early weeks of riding.  She decided it would be best to wear her helmet so she didn’t get hurt if she fell.  And it’s hard to tell, but Megan is actually jumping her scooter while she rides along.

Day in Philadelphia

We took a train to Philadelphia on one day of our staycation last week, to visit the U Penn Museum of Archeology where they have an exhibit about ancient Egypt and mummies.  Megan has been fascinated with this period of history, particularly with mummies, since she studied it last year.

Looking at a Mummy

After the serious-ness of the Egyptian displays and the mummies and a windy lunch, we took the Septa underground train to the historic part of town.  We wanted to see the Liberty Bell but there was a VERY long line, so we opted to just wander around and look at stuff, get some coffee/snacks, and head home a little early.

Looking at Ben Franklin's Grave

We visited the Christ Church Burial Ground where Ben Franklin and some other Declaration of Independence signers are buried. Here we are looking at Ben Franklin’s grave.

Peace?

Barry

We rested by this statue in Independence Square.  Apparently his name is Barry…that’s all it said on the base of his statue.  The girls were amused by that.

George Washington Eternal Flame

We also visited Washington Square which has a memorial to the unknown soldiers of the Revolutionary War and an eternal flame in their honor.  Megan was impressed by the number of soldiers who had died and were buried in that small space in the war for our Independence.

Looking at the plaque & monument

We had a great trip and visit to his historical city.  The girls enjoyed their first train ride and even though they were tired from all the walking, we all enjoyed being out exploring a new place together.
