Megan started Kindergarten!

So I know I’ve been a slacker about keeping up the blog, but sorry…we’ve been busy! I’ll be back soon (sometime after I finish the mountain of forms homework that we received in Megan’s backpack today) with some pictures of the fun we had in July & August but for now wanted to share Megan’s first day of Kindergarten.

She’s been looking forward to this for the entire summer. The past week, we’ve had to talk every day about how many days are left till the big day. Two Fridays ago, we went shopping for a first day dress and a backpack. Last week, she and I visited her classroom one day and one evening, Scott went to the back to school night to meet her teacher and learn the details of what we’d need to know before she started school.

Megan was so excited that she had a hard time going to sleep last night. This morning, she was up bright and early (defined as “before 7 am” in our house) and she wanted to get dressed before I was even into the shower. We got out the door right around 8:15 and made it to school a few minutes before 8:30, just in time to get her into the line and send her into the school with her new classmates. She was a little nervous, but there was another girl who was also a bit nervous, so they stuck together and did great on the way in! No tears for anyone 🙂

Here she is all ready to head out…notice the water dribbles down her front.

Talking backpacks with one of her classmates in line.

And they’re off!

Scott said she talked his ear off the whole way home. It sounds like she had a great day. They had gym class today and played a game called Pirate Ship. They did some artwork and she was proud to have written her name on it. No playground time today, but hopefully they’ll get to do that soon! She says she made some new friends and can’t wait to go back tomorrow. Several times this evening, she reminded me how happy she is to be a Kindergartener and how she can’t wait for tomorrow!

While Scott sleeps…

I came home from work to a quiet house. I knew that something was going on because the girls are almost always awake when I come in. I see that Scott has dozed off on the couch reading a book. I am surprised the girls are so quiet upstairs. I head up to look for them and see that they have gotten the tent out and set it it up. Strange, I don’t see them in here playing in the tent, oh well, I figure they’re in the playroom.

So I head to the playroom and find that they aren’t there either. Then I notice that the gate for the attic stairs has been set aside. Hmm…I head up to investigate. They had gotten into the wrapping paper and were wrapping presents for me, complete with bows and lots and lots of tape.

See? That’s my stack of gifts. I don’t know how long they were up there, but I guess it was a good long while!

They were so excited about the gifts and we had to pretend it was my birthday so I could open them. I had ooh & aah over each one as I opened it. I wonder if this means I don’t get presents on my real birthday?

Bonfire

We spent the night at my parents’ house in Mercersburg and my dad planned a bonfire for that evening. I think that the girls were excited at the prospect of staying up late eating marshmallows! Here they are all set up on the blanket, waiting for the fire to be lit. Note that we had to move back once my dad lit it up, because it was BIG!

Here it is after it burned down a bit. Or maybe before it got really huge.

I loved the glow from the fire – it made everyone’s face have a nice red warmth to it.

After tucking the girls into bed, I went back out and sat with my parents to visit for a bit. While we were sitting there, a fox snuck out of the corn field into the garden to snack on some blackberries. We didn’t see him at first, we heard him in there and hoped he wasn’t a skunk! My dad shined the light into the garden to see what it was and there he sat, just looking into the light with that “deer in the headlights” look. He was so cute and didn’t seem afraid at all. After my dad turned the light off and back on again, he decided to take off. We were all really surprised to see him so up close & personal. Too bad my camera batteries had already died at that point 🙁

Lettuce edged skirt for Molly

Last night, I was working on a little skirt for Molly from some knit I found at JoAnn’s a while back. When I realized it was going to be too short for her I decided to see if I could do a lettuce edge on a regular sewing machine rather than a folded hem. I found this tip in a Google search and it worked really well on a scrap of the fabric so I decided to go for it!

It took a while to finish up the hem, two times around, but I’m happy with how it came out for my first try. I think I’ll be reserving this technique for sleeves & leggings hems from now on! The skirt is still really short, but I think it will work for a bit. I used Kwik Sew 3501 and thought it was really easy to put together. I’ll definitely be making more of them in a bigger size.

Here’s an action shot from this morning – she loves it. Sorry it’s blurry – I couldn’t get her to stand still! I think the length will work for the summer and I’ll make some pink leggings for the fall when it’s too short.

Fireworks!

We just got the girls tucked into bed after watching the “Grand Finale” fireworks for the city of Harrisburg’s three day Musical Festival over the 4th of July (sorry – no pictures!) Megan didn’t stop talking the entire time. “When is it going to start? How long is it going to last? Why are there so many? How do they make them?” And our favorite…”They are lasting a long time – they must have bought ten packs or something.”

This was Molly’s first time seeing fireworks – I don’t think she knew what to think at first. She leaned back in my lap and just watched when they started. After a few booms and flashes, she started to be concerned about the noise. She kept saying “I want them to stop.” I kept talking to her about the pretty colors and asking if she thought they were pretty, and eventually she relaxed and just enjoyed the show. She kept telling us what colors she saw once she started to enjoy it.

They were both sad when the show was over and already wanted to know when the next time we’d see fireworks would be!
