We took a train to Philadelphia on one day of our staycation last week, to visit the U Penn Museum of Archeology where they have an exhibit about ancient Egypt and mummies. Megan has been fascinated with this period of history, particularly with mummies, since she studied it last year.
Viewing the first mummy – above is the top of the sarcophagus, and below is the bottom of the sarcophagus still containing the mummy.
After the serious-ness of the Egyptian displays and the mummies and a windy lunch, we took the Septa underground train to the historic part of town. We wanted to see the Liberty Bell but there was a VERY long line, so we opted to just wander around and look at stuff, get some coffee/snacks, and head home a little early.

We visited the Christ Church Burial Ground where Ben Franklin and some other Declaration of Independence signers are buried. Here we are looking at Ben Franklin’s grave.
We rested by this statue in Independence Square. Apparently his name is Barry…that’s all it said on the base of his statue. The girls were amused by that.
We also visited Washington Square which has a memorial to the unknown soldiers of the Revolutionary War and an eternal flame in their honor. Megan was impressed by the number of soldiers who had died and were buried in that small space in the war for our Independence.
We had a great trip and visit to his historical city. The girls enjoyed their first train ride and even though they were tired from all the walking, we all enjoyed being out exploring a new place together.
